DOE Seeks Public Comment on Energy Corridors
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced that it and several
other federal agencies will host eleven public meetings to discuss
the designation of multi-purpose energy corridors on federal lands
in the western United States.
As our nation grows, so do our energy needs. So we must be forward
looking as we map out energy transmission corridors in order to get
energy to places that need it, Director of DOEs Office of
Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability, Kevin Kolevar said. We
want to make sure that the public is involved early on in this
process and we look forward to this dialogue.
Section 368 of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, requires DOE, along
with the Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Defense and Interior
to identify possible corridors on federal lands in the west to
perform environmental reviews associated with such designations.
These corridors will be for new oil, natural gas and hydrogen
pipelines and electricity transmission and distribution
facilities.
The corridor designation process requires input from many federal
and state agencies, local governments, native American tribes, the
energy companies, businesses, affected landowners, and others. The
public meetings will provide opportunities for interested parties
to express their views on the corridor designation process as the
Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) is being
prepared.
The meetings will be open to the public and will be jointly
convened by DOE, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Bureau of Land
Management. Visit: http://www.doe.gov/engine/content.do?PUBLIC_ID=19023&BT_CODE=PR_PRESSRELEASES&TT_CODE=PRESSRELEASE
for meeting dates and locations.
