Basic Tips Enhance Information Security

According to Winkler, dubbed a "Modern Day James Bond"
because of his keen understanding of the high- and low-tech methods used
to make businesses and organizations susceptible to security breaches,
many organizations are vulnerable because they don't believe they are at
risk.

Don't be just another statistic. Improve your information security
practices with these simple security solutions:

* Shredding sensitive documents is a very basic, yet very
important, security practice. When purchasing maximum security shredders
for government use, look for Department of Defense approved Level 6
machines. With ultra fine shredding capabilities, these shredders can
destroy CDs, DVDs, credit cards and security badges and were originally
developed for top international security authorities. One option is the
Ativa V Shredders, available at Office Depot, which are registered on
the National Security Administration approval list and meet the Federal
Purchasing Guidelines.

* Reviewing documents on a laptop while working outside the office
can maximize productivity, but, if the files include sensitive or
personal information, security can be at risk. While on the go and
operating from a notebook computer, consider using a fingerprint reader,
which provides biometric password protection and helps to keep files
safe.

* The most basic security protection for your PC is to make sure
the operating system is up to date as this is your first line of defense
against hackers. Likewise, always install antivirus, anti-spyware
software, which shields against viruses, spyware, hackers and phishing
scams, and a personal firewall to protect your computer files. Also, be
sure to utilize the recommended security updates as new viruses and
spyware bugs are released virtually every day.

* Register your laptop with the manufacturer and put the serial
number information in a safe place so it can be reported to local law
enforcement should it be lost or stolen. Also, you can never be to
careful whether at the office or on the road, so secure your notebook
from theft by attaching a cable lock, which tethers it to a desk or
other surface.
