GOING GREEN PAYS OFF

More and more municipalities and government agencies are demanding green buildings. In this case, green refers to meaningful strategies for sustainable facility design that encompass all phases of building design, construction, operation, and maintenance.

In an effort to reduce long-term facility costs and to become more environmentally conscious, the General Services Administration (GSA) has mandated that new and remodeled buildings meet a minimum level of sustainable design certification. To this end, the GSA has adopted the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification system created by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) to assess building performance and adherence to sustainable design goals. The LEED Green Building Rating System Version 2.1 provides a national standard delineating the design and construction requirements for a green building. Using the rating system as a design guideline and certification tool, LEED certification ...aims to improve occupant well-being, environmental performance, and economic returns of buildings using established and innovative practices, standards, and technologies.

HAZMAT TEAM UNPREPARED TO BIOTERROR

Denver's Hazardous Materials team says the city is not prepared for a chemical or biological terrorist attack, and that it would cost $200,000 for equipment and training so that the team is able to identify substances. The team had to make an educated guess last week when two teenagers released a substance on a bus that made the driver sick; the team thinks it was liquid pepper spray, but has no way of verifying it. The city agrees that the team needs equipment and training to identify spores, radiation, and unknown powders, liquids, and vapors, but says it does not have the money. While some hazardous material teams are better prepared than others, most cities have expressed that they do not have the necessary detection equipment--largely due to lack of funds.

CLEAN CITIES FOCUSES ON FLEETS

The 9th National Clean Cities Conference & Exposition will be especially useful to government fleet managers and those who make fleet vehicle purchasing decisions. The May 18 to 21 conference in Palm Springs, CA, will feature introductory and advanced sessions on alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) and an opportunity to test-drive or view the latest light-and heavy-duty AFVs.

Conference highlights include a panel discussion with mayors from Salt Lake City and the California cities of Riverside and Palm Springs, who will share how they integrated AFVs into their municipal fleets as well as other tips on creating sustainable communities. Also worth special notice is "The Future of Transportation: Alternative Fuels vs. Advanced Technologies." The Expo Hall, open throughout the conference, will feature exhibits on light- and heavy-duty AFVs, and displays from component manufacturers, associations and a variety of companies that produce AFV equipment.

In addition to sponsoring the Ride-n-Drive, SunLine Transit Agency will offer tours of its "Clean Fuels Mall" on May 18. The Mall boasts the world's largest assortment of clean transportation fuels available to the public. Visitors also will see how hydrogen can be generated from solar energy and reformed from natural gas.

The U.S. Department of Energy and the Coachella Valley and Northwest Riverside County Clean Cities Coalitions are hosts of this year's conference, the world's most ambitious AFV event.
