LAB BOLSTERS INTERNET SECURITY

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), one of nine multi-program national laboratories within the Department of Energy (DOE), has successfully deployed a suite of Internet security solutions to set the stage for greater collaboration with other DOE labs, agencies, and partners.

PNNL strengthened its security environment with software products that offer identification, digital signature, privacy, and security management for both enterprise and Web portal applications by Entrust, Inc. This decision follows the October 2002 deployment of a government-wide license of Entrust's digital identity solution for document management, as part of the DOE's e-Government Strategic Action Plan into cross-departmental information and service delivery.

In fact, PNNL becomes the first DOE site to deploy the digital identities to all staff. The lab's 3,800 employees can now securely exchange e-mail communications, encrypt files, and use digital signatures within business applications, including digitally signing their weekly timecards. PNNL is also working on using the software to authenticate access to collaborative Web applications in a transparent and fully automated way. These secure applications ultimately enable users to increase productivity and share information while driving overall IT costs down.

"Our decision to leverage these solutions to secure the Lab's security infrastructure was premised on the Department of Energy's objective of establishing a secure e-services platform between DOE agencies, partners, and other Federal government departments," said John McCoy, program manager at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. "We wanted a solution that could satisfy our in-house security requirements, but could also scale up and interact seamlessly with other applications and business units outside of our walls as this vision becomes a reality."

NAVY PROVIDES MISSION-CRITICAL METEOROLOGICAL

A U.S. Navy weather center is providing U.S. military forces deployed in the Persian Gulf with highly accurate meteorological information critical to conducting land, sea and air operations. Should the United States go to war with Iraq, weather will have a major impact on how U.S. military operations are conducted in the region.

"Understanding the environment of the battlespace is critical to the success of U.S. military operations," said Dr. Richard Spinrad, technical director to the oceanographer of the Navy. "Meteorological and oceanographic conditions affect the safety and effectiveness of combat personnel, ships, aircraft and ground vehicles, as well as the performance of sophisticated sensor and weapon systems. Mission planners need accurate and timely environmental characterization to choose the right target, the right weapon, the right delivery system, the most effective tactics and even the best time for the strike. To do this requires a lot of data from remote and on-scene sensors, and a lot of computing power to analyze it."

The Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center, Monterey, CA, is home to three supercomputers, manufactured by SGI. The combined computing power of these supercomputers has created one of the world's most sophisticated tools for global weather and ocean modeling, which taps into the largest existing real-time databases of oceanic and atmospheric observations.

Fleet Numerical operates 24 hours a day, 365 days per year and distributes meteorological information to military users around the world based on sophisticated global and regional meteorological and oceanographic models. For instance, the Navy's Coupled Ocean/Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System is used to predict changes in ocean and weather conditions in highly complex coastal areas of the world such as the Persian Gulf.

"Every day, U.S. military forces around the world depend on accurate weather forecasts generated by SGI supercomputers at Fleet Numerical to plan and carry out important missions, " said Mike Clancy, chief scientist, Fleet Numerical. "Our weather forecasting models result in about 500,000 daily oceanographic and atmospheric charts, analyses and forecasts, based on data gathered from satellites, ships buoys, and other weather and ocean sensor sources."

FBI TO OPEN COMPUTERIZED FORENSIC LAB IN CHICAGO

The FBI plans to open a computer forensic lab in Chicago on March 1. The $2.3 million lab will have a staff of 12 initial examiners specialized in retrieving data from damaged, deleted, and encrypted files, in addition to expertise on data collection at crime scenes and evaluation of information submitted by state law enforcement agencies.

The lab will join two computer forensic labs in Dallas and San Diego, which also began operating this year. The labs are dedicated to investigating technology used in Internet-related crimes, such as virus attacks, identity theft, terrorism, and distribution of child pornography. The Federal Trade Commission said identify theft complaints accounted for roughly 43 percent of total complaints received in 2002 and estimated that roughly 50 percent of remaining fraud complaints have some Internet link. Most criminals try to cover their tracks by deleting or changing files containing evidence, but examiners can find deleted material by thoroughly searching the hard drive. The success of the labs could be key to the FBI retaining its role as the country's leading counterterrorism agency.
