Corporate Dollars Buy Access to NGA Meeting
Dozens of companies ponied up $10,000 to $150,000 each to sponsor last weekend's National Governors Association meeting in Seattle, WA, gaining special access to the confab of more than 30 state chief executives.
The 65 sponsors, mostly businesses, contributed nearly $2.2 million to the nonprofit host committee that planned the weekend's events. Many of the sponsors either contract with or are regulated by state governments.

http://list.pentonmedia.com/cgi-bin3/DM/y/egl60D8eaH0JQA0BJrl0A7 Eco-Labels: Making Environmental Purchasing Easier?
Any purchaser who has ever been asked to buy less harmful or more environmentally preferable products has faced the same questions and concerns - I'm not an environmental expert, how do I identify the safer alternatives? Which of the human health or environmental factors is really most important? Can't someone just tell me which products are the green ones?
Luckily, there are a variety of different environmental labeling programs trying to resolve these challenges for purchasers. The eco-labels can make it easier to identify the less harmful and more environmentally preferable alternatives. Some of them even consider broader issues like whether the workers are fairly compensated or whether the rights of indigenous people are being protected.

NIJ Request for Models of Used Body Armor
At the direction of the Attorney General, the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) of the Office of Justice Programs is examining the performance of used Zylon-based body armor. Law enforcement agencies can provide essential support to this effort in three ways.
One test protocol requires NIJ to obtain specific, randomly selected units of used armor that were purchased using Federal funds. In the coming weeks, law enforcement agencies from around the country that own the desired armor(s) will be contacted and asked to submit the armor(s) and information regarding their usage history to NIJ. Agencies that provide these armor(s) at NIJ's request will receive funding to replace the armor(s).
In addition, NIJ has an immediate need for heavily-worn Ultima or Ultimax armors made by Second Chance Body Armor that also have the "Performance Pac" inserts provided by Second Chance. Agencies that have such armor are urged to contact the National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center (NLECTC) toll free at 800-248-2742, or by e-mail at asknlectc@nlectc.org.
At this time, NIJ also is gathering samples of used Zylon-based body armor made by other manufacturers that vary in age, usage history, and geographic location of use. If your agency has used armor(s) that you are willing to volunteer for testing, please contact NLECTC to determine whether these armors may be helpful to NIJ's initiative.

http://list.pentonmedia.com/cgi-bin3/DM/y/egl60D8eaH0JQA0BJ1K0AU Airport Replaces Huge Escalators
Four escalators that were once the largest in the State of Arizona are now in the process of being replaced at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The 90-foot-long escalators were installed in Sky Harbor's Terminal 3 in October of 1979. "This is probably the first time that escalators of this size have been replaced in an open, operating airport" says James Schroeder, Aviation Superintendent for Facilities and Services at Sky Harbor. To minimize the impact on travelers, the four escalators are being removed and replaced in phases. To further reduce inconvenience to travelers, the escalator work is being done late at night, in off-peak hours. The project will be completed by November of this year.
DHS Begins First Interior Repatriation Flights
Representatives from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Government of Mexico announced the first flight between the U.S. and the interior of Mexico, transporting Mexican nationals who illegally entered the United States. The Interior Repatriation Program (IRP) will return illegal migrants to either Mexico City or Guadalajara, on a voluntary basis. Upon arrival in Mexico, bus transportation will be provided to their final destination.
