State Police Test Ticket Machines

The California state police will test a ticket-writing system in San Miguel, Sandoval, and Santa Fe Counties. Two officers patrolling the three counties will use the system to print out tickets to violators of traffic laws. The offices will use a computer card reader to record driver’s license information, and violators will sign an electronic pad to confirm they were tickets. Lt. Jimmy Glascock with the State Police emphasizes the system’s main advantage is to cut down the time requirements associated with traffic stops. NASA’s Supercomputer is World’s Fastest

Silicon Graphics and NASA confirmed that NASA's new Intel Itanium 2 processor-based Columbia supercomputer is the most powerful computer in the world. Only days after NASA completed installation of Columbia--and using just 16 of Columbia's 20 installed systems--the new supercomputer achieved sustained performance of 42.7 trillion calculations per second (teraflops), eclipsing the performance of every supercomputer operating today.

Shattering long-held assumptions about supercomputing deployment, Columbia was built and installed in fewer than 120 days, and was available to scientists throughout its installation. In fact, scientists from NASA centers and universities throughout the U.S. used new Altix systems within days after they arrived at NASA. Columbia is already having a major impact on NASA's science, aeronautics, and exploration programs, in addition to playing a critical role in the Space Shuttle Return to Flight activity.

Public-Private Partnership Funds Cleaner Power Plants

Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham, joined by Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty and Senator Norm Coleman, announced that a team effort led by Excelsior Energy Inc. of Minnetonka, MN, has been selected by the Department of Energy to receive $36 million for the development of one of the cleanest coal-fired power plants in the world.

The project was one of two selected to demonstrate advanced power generation systems using IGCC technology, a variation on a natural gas-fired combined cycle power plant in which a coal-derived gas (produced by the coal gasifier) replaces the natural gas.
