Fans Lower Rising Hot Air in Fleet Facility

At approximately 400,000 sq. ft., with ceilings up to 55 ft. high, Chicago's Throop Street facility is large enough that employees use golf carts to get around. While the facility's ceilings allow work on fire engines and garbage trucks, the height presented a heating problem. After investigating heating alternatives, the city found a cost- and energy-efficient solution.

Houston Police Begin Taser Acquisition

The Houston City Council authorized a contract for 3,700 X26 Tasers non-lethal devices, and associated equipment for the Houston Police Department.

This contract provides a maximum allotment in the amount of $4.7 million for Taser devices and accessories provided by Taser International and GT Distributors, Inc. The initial order from this prospective contract is approximately $3.7 million and the Taser X26 devices will be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2004. The approximate $1 million remainder will be used for additional equipment associated with needs relating to TASER technology in the next years.

This approval allows the Houston Police Department to purchase non-lethal device for all of its patrol officers making this the single largest law enforcement deployment of Taser technology in the world.

"The TASER system will allow our officers another option to deploy when faced with incidents that could possibly result in serious injury to officers and citizens," says Houston Police Chief Harold Hurtt.

Forest Service to Fight Invasive Species

The U.S. Forest Service has introduced a national strategy to prevent and control the threat of invasive species and non-native plants in the United States. An estimated 70 million acres of public and private lands are at serious risk from 26 different insects and diseases nationwide, most of which are non-native.

The plan will use an early warning system to help land managers detect new invasives. Title VI of the 2004 Healthy Forests Restoration Act directs the Forest Service to develop such a system to improve its detection and response abilities to ecological disturbances across the nation.

To learn more about the Forest Service's National Strategy and Implementation Plan for Invasive Species Management, read the new strategy at: www.fs.fed.us/foresthealth/publications/Invasive_Species.pdf.
