Refurbished Fireboat Saves Lives, Property
After logging thousands of sea miles during 40 years of faithful service, the William Lyon MacKenzie, Toronto harbor's faithful fireboat, receives a well-deserved refurbishing. The sole fireboat responsible for the 50 miles around Toronto and its suburban area responds to just fewer than 400 calls per year. The vessel is responsible for ice breaking, search and rescue, fire keeping and shipping traffic traveling through the area. The ship's ice-breaking capabilities allow it to perform search and rescue missions in wintry conditions that prevent other vessels or equipment from accessing frozen areas on the lake.

Victory for Voting Rights in Ohio
As the result of a class action lawsuit filed by the Prison Reform Advocacy Center (PRAC), the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction has agreed to notify formerly incarcerated people of their eligibility to vote on November 2nd. The landmark settlement clears the way for thousands of Ohio citizens who did not know they could vote to register by the October 4th registration deadline.

Sands Shift into America's Newest National Park
The Great Sand Dunes of Colorado have become the nation's newest national park. At a ceremony in Colorado, Interior Secretary Gale Norton designated the Great Sand Dunes National Monument as the country's 58th national park, calling it a "living hourglass."

Immigration Goes On Courtesy Offensive
Complaints from international travelers to the United States about hostile treatment by immigration officials have prompted the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to institute a code of conduct to ensure officers treat visitors with respect.
According to Robert Bonner, CBP Commissioner, complaints had come from all over the world, but his department was particularly struck by the number from Britain.
One of the major issues was the handcuffing, detention and deportation of some potential visitors who had committed "minor technical visa violations" previously -- such as briefly or unwittingly breaching a 90-day permission to stay.
Bonner said risk-free travelers would no longer suffer such treatment and added that CBP officers now had discretionary powers to allow entry to visitors who had committed only minor violations. Source: Airwise.com.
