Federal agencies are continuing their commitment to contracting with Mississippi businesses, particularly small and minority business owners, for products and services needed during the Hurricane Katrina recovery. News Postal Service Upgrades Vacuum Systems at Sorting Facilities The United States Postal Service (USPS) processes up to half a billion pieces of mail every day of the year, using mail-processing equipment that is required to read and sort up to 36,000 pieces of mail per hour. To keep up with that high level of performance, the USPS has contracted to deploy new central vacuum systems at 480 sorting facilities. The USPS contract with Nilfisk-Advance America relates to the cleaning of the mail-processing equipment - such as Delivery Bar Code Sorter and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) based machines, was awarded after a competitive bid process. The central system consists of the vacuum producer and a network of steel tubing that will remove debris for deposit at a central location. Gives users the ability to move a suspended hose the full length of the machine to be cleaned, and enables the hose and attachments to remain at any height the operator desires. Roll out is slated to begin in 2006. Mayor Seeks Levees to Withstand Category 5 Storms Nine weeks after the Category 4 hurricane indundated New Orleans, Mayor Ray Nagin was in Washington last week seeking federal funds to rebuild the city's levees strong enough to protect against storms with even higher winds and a greater storm surge than Katrina brought. The Army Corp of Engineers currently has no legal authority to rebuild the city's flood protection from hurricanes stronger that a Category 3 storm. Nagin asked for stronger, higher levees not just for New Orleans residents, but because "New Orleans is a economic hub for the entire nation." Source: Environmental News Service.
