News County to Test Wireless Law Enforcement Technology Officers in Berks County, PA, are testing wireless technology that will allow officers in the field to use a small laptop computer to access the state's Justice Network, or JNET, which installed the required hardware and software and will cover costs for the next six months. "It's even more that a mobile office," says Sheriff Barry Jozwiak. "It's more than just a laptop in a police car. This allows you access any time, anywhere." Berks was chosen to test the technology because of its past participation in initiatives aimed at boosting cooperation among law enforcement, including a central processing center used by county police departments. "We can run everything you can think of in the system: license plates, vehicle-identification numbers, gun checks, missing persons, wanted persons, prison records, probation records, driving records, protection-from-abuse orders," says assistant chief deputy Michael Garipoli. Volunteers Guide Airport Passengers If you have visited Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in the past several years, you have no doubt either seen or met a Navigator. This volunteer group is celebrating its fifth anniversary at the airport. Navigator volunteers, wearing purple shirts and jackets and "Ask Me" buttons, stand throughout Sky Harbor's three terminals, offering assistance, answering questions and giving directions to the airport's 40 million annual passengers. More than 500 Navigators currently serve Sky Harbor, making this one of the largest and most successful airport volunteer programs in the United States. Since November of 2000, this group has volunteered more than 258,000 hours, the equivalent of 124 full time employees, at a value of more than $5 million to the City of Phoenix. News of the Weird
