Trust Announces Rural Heritage Development

The National Trust for Historic Preservation announced the Rural Heritage Development Initiative, a project that will work with two rural pilot regions to implement preservation-based economic development strategies. The new initiative is funded in significant part through a $745,000 three-year grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Proposals are being solicited from regions that have the capacity to work collaboratively to develop cultural and heritage assets for economic benefit. For application information, click here

USDA Mobile Lab Helps Contain Exotic Pests

A new U.S. Department of Agriculture mobile biocontainment laboratory that will allow scientists to work more safely with invasive species and other agricultural threats was unveiled at the U.S. Horticultural Research Laboratory (USHRL) in Ft. Pierce, FL.

"This mobile unit will allow USDA's Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) to continue cooperative efforts to protect American agriculture from a variety of pests and diseases," said ARS Administrator Edward B. Knipling. "It's another example of the strong partnership between the two agencies, which have previously partnered in efforts to control fire ants, detect bovine spongiform encephalopathy, and eradicate screwworms and fruit flies."

Corn Growers Applaud Renewable Fuels Legislation

The National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) applauded Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Chair James Inhofe (R-Okla.) and Sens. George Voinovich (R-Ohio) and Kit Bond (R-Mo.) for introducing legislation that establishes a Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS) requiring 6 billion gallons of renewable fuels be blended into the nation's fuel supply annually by 2012. The measure would significantly increase the contribution of ethanol and biodiesel to the U.S. fuel supply.

"NCGA congratulates the senators and their diligent staffs for beginning the debate on the RFS at 6 billion gallons, a 20 percent increase over the last Congress' RFS number," said NCGA President Leon Corzine. "We recognize this is only the first step in the lengthy legislative process to get a comprehensive energy bill to the president's desk this year. We will work to ensure that RFS legislation is successfully passed out of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee (EPW).
