Illinois Introduces Agroterror Defense System

Illinois is employing new technology that will help state officials detect and respond to terrorist attacks against the state's agricultural assets. The computerized tracking system uses geographic information system (GIS) technology to collect information on all livestock, grain elevators, food processing plans, and transportation companies. A pilot project launched in Clinton County, Ill., in 2003 showed the coordination of information through the system can result in a coordinated and swift response that can contain disease outbreaks.

The GIS-based system will be developed in two phases. Phase one will focus on the collection of data and the development of a strategic plan focusing on animal health. Phase two will involve the development of the software needed to track animals and other assets.
