ISM Discontinues A.P.P. Accreditation

The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) will no longer be accepting new exam registrations for the Accredited Purchasing Practitioner (A.P.P.) designation. Purchasing professionals registered prior to March 1, 2005 will have up to one year to take their exams. Those already holding the A.P.P. designation may still apply for reaccreditation.

An study of IMS’s programs, conducted in association with Knapp and Associates International, initiated ISM’s decision to free up resources to strengthen other programs and undertake new initiatives.

In the next year, the Certified Purchasing Manager (C.P.M.) designation will be reviewed and updated.

Probation Officers Gain an Eye In the Sky

Probationers in five northeastern Minnesota counties are piloting a new tracking technology that allows probation officers to contact them at any time and follow their movements via Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. Unlike the relatively low-tech electronic ankle bracelet that ensures people are within 150 feet of their home phone, the GPS phones used in the Minnesota pilot program allow probation officers to send text messages or call offenders' phones with the requirement that the offenders respond. The call-out function on the phones has been disabled, so people cannot place calls using the phones.

Arrowhead Regional Corrections executive director Tom Roy, whose group serves the five Minnesota counties and is leading the pilot, says the technology is a low-cost alternative to incarceration. Phones cost just $60 and the accompanying software costs about $200. GPS positions are sent from the phone to a Web-based application that probation officers can monitor to see if an offender went to a treatment meeting, for example. Currently, the pilot project is being used for DWI violators, drug court participants, people awaiting trial, and juveniles released from treatment programs. Roy says the pilot is meant to find out which groups of offenders the GPS phones are best suited for. Source: The National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center (NLECTC).
