Radio Communications Connect First Responders Throughout Katrina Despite the devastating impact of Hurricane Katrina, a range of local, city, parish, commercial and military radio communications systems have withstood the impact of the storm and remained online, providing a crucial communications link for public safety responders throughout the state. News Army Corps of Engineers Moves Forward in Disaster Recovery In support to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers has been working with local, state and federal partners, to bring relief to the Gulf following Hurricane Katrina. More than 1,600 Corps employees are actively engaged in recovery efforts, and the numbers are increasing daily. With more than $2.9 billion in missions, the Corps is working closely with its government and contracting partners to meet the most urgent needs, including providing ice and water, temporary roofing, temporary housing, power assessment, and debris removal across the area impacted by Hurricane Katrina. Additionally, work continues to repair the levees around New Orleans and pump floodwater out of the city. Marines Salvage Mississppi Marina Divers from Underwater Construction Team (UCT) 1, based out of Little Creek, Va., clear a marina that was ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. The team of 15 divers from UCT 1 is on its fourth day of recovery efforts at the small fishing marina, which provides $15 million in oysters and $5 million in shrimp revenue to the communities of southern Mississippi each year. According to Chief Builder (SCW/DSW) Margaret S. Cooper of UCT-1, the first priority of the team has been clearing the marina of all the debris collected during the storm surge that hit the area Aug. 29.
