Mayors Release 10-Point Legislative Agenda More than 260 of the nation’s mayors wrapped up the 75th Winter Meeting of the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 26. Led by Conference President and Trenton, New Jersey, Mayor Douglas H. Palmer, the mayors discussed a variety of issues that impact America’s cities with new Congressional leaders and presidential hopefuls. Some of those issues included achieving energy independence, climate protection, homeland security and rising crime, poverty in America, affordable housing, and children and youth services, among others. GAO Analysts Campaign to Organize Union The International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE) announced that employees at the Government Accountability Office (GAO) have launched a union organizing campaign to represent the 1,500 analysts. This campaign has gained support from hundreds of GAO analysts at all levels, ages and lengths of service. This is the first time that a vote for union representation rights will be held at the agency that serves as Congress’ investigative arm.
NEWS DC Saves $30 Million on Electricity Contract The District of Columbia Government's Office of Contracting and Procurement (OCP) and the District Department of the Environment, Energy Division conducted a reverse auction on the Internet to provide the best market price for 1.5 billion kilowatt hours of electricity (kWh) services over three years. This volume of electricity is enough to power all major U.S. professional sports facilities - combined - every day for more than a year. The $134 million contract begins this month. Speed Cushions Slow Cars, Not Emergency Vehicles In early November, the Ada County Highway District installed speed cushions to slow traffic on Bison St. in Boise, ID. The devices were installed in response to resident complaints of speeding vehicles. While the first request for traffic calming was denied, the residents appealed the decision and the district's commissioners unanimously approved the appeal. VA Improves Services for Blinded and Low-Vision Vets More than a million visually impaired veterans will receive enhanced health care services from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) under a reorganization of VA's vision rehabilitation services. Seattle Green Factor Becomes Law Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels has signed legislation that will increase landscaping requirements in the city, in part to reduce runoff. It incorporates the new Seattle Green Factor (SGF) that promotes tree planting, garden walls, and green roofs. Rural Areas to Benefit From $90 Million in Electricity Upgrades Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns announced that $92 million in electric loans will be provided to utilities in 10 states. An estimated 14,093 new customers will be served, and 850 miles of distribution lines will be constructed.
