FEATURES Beware of Greenwashing: Not All Environmental Claims are Meaningful The growing demand for more environmentally preferable goods and services has led many manufacturers to find cost-effective ways of improving their environmental performance and the environmental performance of their offerings. As a result, safer cleaning products are available. Computers, copiers, and other office equipment are available without hazardous components. Cars are more efficient. Fewer trees are being cut to make paper. Less polluting energy sources are increasingly available. P-Card Program Transforms County Procurement Strides in technology have enhanced many aspects of procurement functions, and purchasing cards (P-cards) offer one prime example. Whereas the manual purchase order system previously used in Polk County, FL, was expensive, time-consuming, and difficult to monitor, purchasing cards are exactly the opposite.
NEWS TSA Awards Contracts for Airport X-ray Machines The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has awarded $1.4 million in initial contracts to L3 Communications, Smiths Detection and Rapiscan Systems for use of the companies' advance-technology (AT) X-ray machines in airports. DOE Will Spend up to $51.8 Million on Superconductor Research As part of the agency's efforts to modernize the nation's electricity grid, the Department of Energy said that it will spend up to $51.8 million on five cost-shared research projects focusing on superconductors. According to the agency, the research will advance the development and application of high-temperature superconductors, which, the agency says, have the potential to alleviate congestion on the nation's electricity grid. Web TV Channel Focuses Exclusively on Cities In an effort to bring up-to-date information to city officials, the National League of Cities (NLC) recently introduced NLC TV, an Internet-based TV channel that is “about and for cities.” According to the organization, NLC TV will provide live and taped Web cast coverage of NLC conferences and other events as well as video programming on successful initiatives, lessons learned and best practices being applied in cities. Minnesota Turns to RFID to Monitor Inmates Minnesota's Department of Corrections (DOC) is preparing to introduce a $500,000 radio frequency identification (RFID) prisoner-tracking system at one of its centers to increase security and automate the tracking of inmates. Earlier in June, the DOC announced that it is implementing the prisoner-tracking system in the 1,300-prisoner Minnesota Correctional Facility, a minimum-to-medium security facility which contains sex offenders. Census Bureau to Update Employment Numbers During the week of July 15, 2007, nearly 2,000 Census Bureau field representatives will interview about 72,000 households across the nation for the monthly Current Population Survey (CPS). The CPS is co-sponsored by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Census Bureau. Before the survey, local households selected in the nationwide sample will receive an informational letter from Census Bureau Director Louis Kincannon. Some participants are interviewed by telephone and others are interviewed in person, by field representatives who carry official identification.
