FEATURES The Perception Gap I can’t think of a better place to write my inaugural editor’s note than at the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing’s (NIGP) 62nd Annual Forum and Products Exposition in Hartford, Conn. While my schedule only allowed me to attend two days of the forum, it’s been more than enough time to meet some terrific people and to begin to put my finger on the pulse of the profession. But we also need to realize that we are uniquely positioned within our agencies to facilitate and encourage certain types of change.
NEWS U.S. Army Announces $2.5 Billion in Contract Additions for Chemical Weapons Demilitarization Work The U.S. Army Chemical Materials Agency has awarded additions to Washington Group International's contracts at three U.S. chemical weapons demilitarization plants, with the value of the modifications estimated at $2.5 billion. Eco-Friendly Painted Trucks Take to U.S. Highways Ford Motor Co. and U-Haul have launched the industry's first fleet of rental trucks painted with Ford's new environmentally responsible technology that significantly reduces greenhouse gases over traditional automotive painting and saves the company’s production costs. NASA Awards First-Stage Contract for Rocket Project To spearhead the design, development, testing and evaluation of the first stage of the Ares I and Ares V launch vehicles, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has signed a $1.8 billion contract with Alliant Techsystems, known as ATK, located near Brigham City, Utah. Underpayment of Gas Royalties Costs Burlington $97.5 Million The U.S. Department of Justice has announced that Burlington Resources Inc. agreed to pay the United States government $97.5 million to resolve claims that it underpaid royalties owed on natural gas produced from federal and Indian leases. Department of Justice Awards More Than $2.4 Million to Fight Crime in Utah The U.S. Department of Justice has awarded more than $2.4 million in anti-crime funding to the Utah Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice. The funds, provided through the Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program, will be used by the state to prevent and control crime and improve the criminal justice system.
